On Saturday, 11 July 2026, WERA’S Care Foundation conducted a community sensitization activity in Northeast Nigeria, specifically in Maiduguri, Borno State, focused on cholera prevention, early identification, and timely referral.
The session provided participants with information on the signs and symptoms of cholera, including frequent watery diarrhoea and vomiting, and emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention early rather than waiting until an affected person becomes severely weak or dehydrated.
Participants were also sensitized on practical cholera prevention measures, including maintaining household and environmental cleanliness, keeping water containers properly covered, and practicing safe water handling and hygiene.
They were taught how to correctly prepare Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) using the appropriate quantities of water, salt, and sugar. Participants were reminded that ORS is a first-aid measure to help prevent dehydration while seeking medical care and does not replace treatment at a health facility.
The sensitization also highlighted available referral pathways, encouraging participants to promptly refer anyone experiencing symptoms of cholera to the nearest Primary Health Care facility. As part of the activity, Aquatabs were distributed to participants to support safe water treatment at the household level.
Through this initiative, WERA’S Care Foundation continues to promote community awareness, prevention, and early action to help reduce the impact of cholera and strengthen community preparedness during public health emergencies.
